The Apocalypse

• The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse
• A few generations after Death had returned magic into the hands of the humans, magical cults were formed. These cults were focused mainly on creating magic to surpass Death himself. These cults followed in Death’s footsteps in attempting to taint existing magic. Each cult had gone about tainting magic in different ways.
  
  A certain cult had managed to distort magic to an extent greater than the rest. However, when they had released this magic into the world, it had distorted the celestials which were exposed to it. Luckily, the magic was contained only to the mortal realm. Unfortunately, Death was sentenced to roam the mortal realms for the eternity and fell victim to it.
  
  This magic changed Death entirely. It was as if his entire existence had been reforged. His appearance changed and, as his disciples were tied to him and his magic, they had experienced this change as well. The four of them became known as the four horsemen and their only objective was the destruction of all mortal beings. Led by Death, the four horsemen had set out on their journey to destroy the mortals and herald the apocalypse.
  Lady Oriel, who had been tasked with being the keeper of heaven had become the horseman of Pestilence. Though many humans thought less of her as her impact on the world was not as immediate as the other three, that was one of their gravest mistakes. Pestilence had given the world’s insects and vermin new diseases which slowly spread to other animals, including livestock and eventually the humans. Though not acting as quickly as the other horsemen, these diseases of hers would last for generations to come and claim the lives of many a poor mortal.
  
  Lord Morningstar, the overseer of hell had become the horseman of Famine. Though his effects were seen more quickly than Pestilence, he was by far not the fastest acting of the four horsemen. His mere existence made food a scarcity, causing many humans to starve to death. His manner of genocide was slow and agonisingly painful, something fitting for the being who once oversaw the torture of evil souls.
  
  Grimm, the disciple given no special task except to be Death’s companion, had become the horseman of War. His manner of attempted extinction of the mortals attacked both their mental state as well as their physical bodies. His very presence had made the humans very hostile to one another. It caused them to initiate brawls and other manners of physical assaults on one another. He was even able to ignite wars amongst mortal nations, causing them to wipe each other out.
  
  It was during the apocalypse that Death was given many different names. He was dubbed the Reaper, the Pale Rider and the Headless Horseman. In his new form he carried with him a scythe which he used to reap the souls of humans. Unlike in his previous form, he did not carry the souls of mortals to the afterlife. Instead, he consumed their souls to fuel his power of destruction. As a result of him simply consuming the souls and not guiding them to an eternity of happiness, he was even more feared than ever before.
  
  This Apocalypse continued until the other gods were forced to intervene. They all worked together to syphon the tainted magic from Death. However, they were forced to expel the magic into the cosmos as the threat of them becoming distorted due to the magic themselves was very real. As the magic is still in existence, it is quite possible that the Apocalypse might occur once more.
  
  The mortal realm, however, was rescued from demise by the gods. The world was still heavily impacted by the impact of the four horsemen. New diseases claimed the lives of many, food supply across the world was scarce and the human population had decreased immensely. It took quite a lot of effort and time for the human race to recover from the events that took place, and many were very wary of magic after all was said and done.
